9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Join us for Vocal Tech 2006, a GRAMMY Professional Development Event for all levels of singing, that features expert panels and master classes on vocalist-specific issues, techniques and health topics. Focusing on collaboration, Vocal Tech will get participants involved in successful ways to work with producers, engineers, musicians, songwriters, and other singers in the business.

Vocalists and collaborators are invited to participate in this unique conference that will feature workshops with industry professionals. The workshops include:

  • "Speech Level Singing" with Seth Riggs (master teacher of speech level singing and vocal coach to Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Bernadette Peters and Eduardo Villa)
  • "Vocal Performance In The Studio" with Narada Michael Walden (GRAMMY-winning producer and songwriter, also a drummer/vocalist/composer who has produced/written songs for James Brown, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Sting, and Stevie Wonder)
  • "Vocal Endurance & Touring Health" with Jan Smith (vocalist/coach/producer, who has worked with the top singers of Atlanta and beyond, including Usher, Rob Thomas, India.Arie and Ciara)
  • "Making Hits: Vocal Production" with Kara DioGuardi (vocal producer/songwriter/singer, who has written No. 1 hit songs for Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff and Pussycat Dolls)
  • "The Art Of Jazz Vocal Improvisation" with Kitty Margolis (San Francisco jazz vocalist, known for excellence in scatting, lively performances, and as a teacher for "Demystifying Jazz Singing")
  • "Making Magic: Background Vocals" with Darryl Phinnessee (vocalist/songwriter with a successful career in background vocals for artists including Anita Baker, Aaron Neville, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson)
  • "Collaborations In Latin Music" with Orlando Castro (hit songwriter for Luis Miguel, Jerry Rivera and Cristian); and "Classical Master Class" with Monroe Kanouse and Eric Howe (San Francisco Conservatory of Music faculty; opera conductor and vocal physiologist, respectively)

The event will also feature do-it-yourself demos teaching techniques of how to best record and track your songs, and a "Vocal Health Panel" with San Francisco doctors and vocal health specialists. Attendees will also have the opportunity to test out live performance mics, studio mics, and home studio gear to find out what works best for their voice and style of music.

Admission is $55 for Recording Academy members, and $75 for non-members. Space is limited. RSVP by calling the San Francisco Chapter at 415.749.0779 or e-mail sanfrancisco@grammy.com.
